Fit for God: The 8-Week Plan That Kicks the Devil Out and Invites Health and Healing in
Lavita Weaver, La Vita Weaver. Galilee Book, $13.99 (304pp) ISBN 978-0-385-49832-6
Weaver, who appears as a regular fitness expert on Trinity Broadcast Network's ""TotaLee Fit"" program, addresses body image repeatedly throughout this book, which begins with several candid autobiographical chapters on growing up black in suburban Maryland. Weaver became pregnant out of wedlock as a high school sophomore, and her depression over this and an abusive husband propelled her to eat everything in sight and gain 80 pounds. After two more children and nightmarish forays into bulimia and depression, she worked the pounds off with a gradual program that combined vigorous exercise with gospel music and praise. She became an aerobics instructor and began reading the Bible every day; later she combined these two practices by reciting scripture while exercising. In the rest of the book, Weaver shares her eight-week Fit for God program, which blends sound weight-loss advice with a relentlessly enthusiastic charismatic Christianity.
