Star Time
Joseph Amiel. Crown Publishers, $20 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-517-57519-2
Amiel ( Deeds ) targets the hype and illusions of network TV in this fast-reading, though formulaic, novel. Ambitious TV producer Greg Lyall, and fledgling reporter Christine Paskins fall in love while working for the Federal Broadcasting System. Their sexually charged relationship matches their respective career drives. Greg has an overwhelming need for success and recognition, however, a compulsion explained in flashbacks to his childhood, when he was abandoned by his mother. Although the plot takes predictable turns when Greg forsakes Christine to marry the daughter of the network's aging CEO, Amiel keeps the pages turning when Greg becomes CEO and Christine returns to FBS as its star news anchor. The couple's resumed affair is just one development in a series of power struggles, sexual infidelities and other betrayals among colorful stars and ruthless executives in this glitzy account of media machinations. 30,000 first printing; $30,000 ad/promo.
