Letters from Philippa
Anne Graham Estern. Skylark Books, $3.5 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-553-15941-7
Sarah Bingham lives in a vintage New England house where family history stretches back six generations. Bereft of their father and his income, the current Bingham generation faces financial problems that are eventually solved by a unique partnership between the house itself and one of its past inhabitants. When the house becomes a bed-and-breakfast, Sarah discovers--in the attic--letters from a great-great-great aunt, and the delicate veil between the living and the dead is torn. The girl becomes haunted by Phillipa Bingham's Victorian world--in England's Devon countryside as well as in Connecticut. Phillipa's mysterious plea, ``Sarah, uncover what I have in mind,'' leads her to a coded letter that suggests hidden treasure. In its rapid unfolding and spare telling, the story holds attention. Although the characters are emotionally flat and their dialogue contrived, many readers will find the story and its settings homey and comfortable. Ages 8-12. (Nov.)
