Oh, Brother
Johniece Marshall Wilson, Johnniece Marshall Wilson. Scholastic, $10.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-590-41363-3
Conscientious, hardworking Alex recounts the frustrations of being bossy Andrew's put-upon younger brother. Andrew is a pill, all right: he takes his brother's bike without asking, even though Alex needs it for his paper route; he skips out when it's his turn to watch the baby and he steals money from Alex's private stash. And if Alex seems a bit too nice (he even reads to the old lady next door) readers nevertheless will cheer him on when he finally asserts himself. Characterization of all but the two brothers in this genial black family is a bit thin, but the story moves fairly well and has a satisfying conclusion. The appealing cover illustrations of the two boys in their shared room should snag many potential readers. Ages 10-13. (January)
