Touched by God: Black Gospel Greats Share Their Stories of Finding God

Grammy Award-winner Jones and journalist Sussman (Lord, I'm Comin' Home) collect the stories of several contemporary black gospel superstars. These singers, including Kirk Franklin, Shirley Caesar and Vickie Winans, narrate dramatic accounts of the obstacles they have faced and the ways that God has changed their lives and shaped their music. For example, doctors told singer and pianist Kurt Carr that he might lose the use of his hand as the result of multiple stab wounds incurred in a struggle with thieves. According to Carr, God miraculously healed him, and he testifies now to God's miracle in his concerts. LaShun Pace shares the story of a miserable period in her life when, depressed about the failure of her marriage, she attempted suicide. Having overcome her suicidal tendencies, she now proclaims that God provides help for all those who seek it. These and other inspiring stories of hope and transformation bring us closer to these performers, who deliver God's message in their powerful music. (Dec.)
