The Things We Do for Love: A Leo Haggerty Mystery
Benjamin M. Schutz. Scribner Book Company, $0 (211pp) ISBN 978-0-684-18990-1
Schutz's fourth sizzler starring private eye Leo Haggerty takes him from Washington, D.C., to a lush if lethal tropic isle. Leo has hired rock promoter Nick Ballantine to guard singer/lyricist Jane ``Doe,'' nee Summers, the target of an unknown murderer. Checking on members of Jane's group, the Pleasure Principle, the detective finds them insisting she accept a lucrative offer against her ``artistic'' principles. The lead guitarist, Axel (Axeman), Jane's ex-lover, is her most bitter opponent. It is, however, not Axeman but his new girlfriend who attacks Jane and wounds Leo. Believing the danger past, the grateful singer invites the detective to join her on an island in the Carribbean. He hopes to become a friend to the young woman he now sees as lost and lonely. But the faceless enemy follows, turning the vacation into a terror-filled time and harrowing the reader's nerves, right up to the story's last split second. (Feb.)
