My First Book of Patterns
Bobby and June George, illus. by Boyoun Kim. Phaidon, $16.95 (66p) ISBN 978-0-7148-7249-0
The Georges, founders of a Montessori school and app company, show how 10 shapes replicate to become 10 patterns while also including some tantalizing vocabulary: Harlequin! Argyle! Paisley! Three-spread sequences introduce each pattern: the base shape (“This is a zigzag. A lot of zigzags make...”), followed by the big reveal (“chevron!”) and a scene that showcases the pattern, in this case shelves of books, toy robots, dolls, and other playthings. Newcomer Kim’s screenprintlike illustrations feature a bright, sherbet-colored palette that makes each pattern pop, whether she’s highlighting checkered sailing ships in a seascape or vehicles with unexpectedly floral paint jobs. A sharply designed and very useful intro to shapes and patterns. Ages 1–3. (Sept.)
