Breakfast: The Cookbook
Emily Elyse Miller. Phaidon, $49.95 (464p) ISBN 978-0-71487-804-1
Miller, founder of BreakfastClub, a service offering breakfast tours in cities worldwide, delivers a wonderful collection of breakfast meals from around the globe. The nearly 400 recipes are grouped by ingredients and include mainstays such as eggs, cereals, and pancakes, but also less predictable entries such as soups and stews, fish and meat, and rice and noodles. Japanese rolled omelets, Russian kasha, and Indian vegetable roti are just a few examples of the diverse array of recipes included. Miller also presents enticing sandwiches ranging from American breakfast burritos to South Korean street toast, Vietnamese banh mi, and Lebanese semolina crust cheese sandwiches. She rounds out her volume with nearly endless options of yogurts (labneh from Israel and Iceland’s skyr), toasts (Hawaiian french toast and avocado toast) and breads (bialys and flatbried), cakes (orange pound cake and lemon muffins), pies and pastries (pain au chocolat and cornetti). This solid recipe collection will be a boon to those whose favorite meal of the day is their first. (May)
