That Last Weekend
Laura DiSilverio. Midnight Ink, $15.99 trade paper (336p) ISBN 978-0-7387-5253-2
In this less-than-thrilling standalone from DiSilverio (Close Call), five women in their late 30s, who were close friends in college in North Carolina, get together for a reunion at a bed-and-breakfast. Four of them attend reluctantly, since the last one ended in tragedy 10 years earlier. Surprise! This one ends in tragedy, too. Lauren Muir, just appointed to a judgeship and single, wants to have a baby. Ellie Ordahl is suffering from empty-nest syndrome with her twins off to college. Geneva Frost is expecting her first baby momentarily. And Dawn Infanti is mourning her frustrated art career. All have reason to hate and resent Evangeline Paul, who organized the weekend and winds up dead the morning after everyone arrives at the bed and breakfast. Plus, the husband-wife caretaker and cook at the bed-and-breakfast are resentful that the place is being sold. The unexpected twist at the end doesn’t make up for hundreds of pages of predictable plot. Agent: Paige Wheeler, Creative Media Agency. (Sept.)
