Give and Take
Lucie Félix. Candlewick Studio, $19.99 (16p) ISBN 978-0-7636-9011-3
Readers are asked to remove and replace cardboard shapes from the pages of this well-designed introduction to opposites. Lifting a diamond-shaped piece from the top of a box (“open”) reveals a mouse inside; children then use the same green diamond to “close” a reptilian creature’s mouth. Removing a large circle uncovers an inset mirror (“Now you see me...”), and placing it over a white circle creates an instant eclipse (“Now you don’t!”). Rendered in a bright, crayon-box palette, Félix’s graphics demonstrate each word or phrase with clarity, and the shapes’ transformations evoke real delight. Ages 3–7. (Sept.)
