On the Road to Same Sex Marriage: A Supprtive Guide to Psychological, Political, and Legal Issues
Robert P. Cabaj, Cabaj. Jossey-Bass, $23 (218pp) ISBN 978-0-7879-0962-8
This collection of essays by therapists, lawyers, etc., edited by San Francisco psychiatrist Cabaj and Emory University psychologist Purcell, adds little to the debate on same-sex marriage. The facts, figures and issues are kept at a basic level. The book addresses issues from the history of same-sex unions, through adoption and artificial insemination, to the role of religion, to current international trends. And, indeed, there are a number of interesting tidbits here. But not much effort seems to have been put into argument or research, with much of the international trend discussion, for example, relying on second- and third-hand sources. The bibliographical lists and Web site and Internet discussion group locations, as well as the resource list, are useful, though footnotes would also have been helpful. (Nov.)
