Never Be Tired Again
David C. Gardner, Grace Joely Beatty. Rawson Associates, $19.95 (370pp) ISBN 978-0-89256-337-1
Billed as ``the seven-day high-energy program millionaires have paid thousands for,'' this book was developed by two California psychologists. But the so-called seven days are merely a prelude: the program, in fact, is lifelong, and here begin the book's many contradictions. Gardner and Beatty write gliblyfor intelligent, highly motivated readers. They stress the power of mind over body, yet their regimen emphasizes physical fitness. Their stated goal is high energy, but in practice this is merely one benefit of adherence to the latest scientific wisdoms they tout in low-fat, low-sugar nutrition, stress management and aerobic exercise. Diet and exercise recommendations are sound; mental exercises read like pop psychology. Informative nutritional and exercise tables, appealing recipes and an extensive bibliography contrast with gimmicky self-quizzes and worthless ``checklists.'' As a resource, the book contains much that's valuable; as a program, it will be hard for most readers to swallow. (Dec.)
