Wild Maine: Discoveries of a Wildlife Photographer
Bill Silliker, JR.. Down East Books, $25 (96pp) ISBN 978-0-89272-630-1
This captivating book by dedicated wildlife photographer Silliker has an accessible, homespun feel. Wonderfully close-up full-color photographs--obviously obtained thanks to patience and innate knowledge of the habits of Maine's native creatures--provide a glimpse into the private lives of wild animals. Succinct, engaging text accompanies the 97 images and offers readers further insight into the lives of black bears, hooded seals, lynx, moose, deer, Atlantic puffins and more. Silliker also includes a few personal anecdotes of his own, describing, for example, how he managed to revive a stunned chickadee that flew into his home's picture window. This combination of friendly, intimate prose and great images may make readers feel that they've happened upon the animals--often adorable, sometimes startling or even alarming--themselves while out exploring Maine's great outdoors.
