The Militarized Zone: What Did You Do in the Army, Grandpa?

Despite some laugh-out-loud moments and clever comebacks, Johnson’s debut feels dated. The book chronicles a draftee’s reluctant tour of duty in the U.S. Army, where mischief, mishaps, military incompetence, and the occasional vindictive high-ranking officer make for comical and sometimes poignant moments. In 1969, Will Jensen unsuccessfully attempts to avoid the draft, so his goal becomes to complete his two years of service and have a good time doing it. Through a bit of luck and scheming, he’s assigned to G-1, formally known as Headquarters Company, Eighth U.S. Army, Yongsan Compound, Seoul, Korea. It’s at G-1 where the fun really begins—officer assignments are made or modified there, and Will and his cohorts take full advantage of the power they’re given. Will also explores Asia, which adds to his military experience in both funny and profound ways. Johnson’s GIs have some hilarious scenes, but too often the story feels old and tired—right down to the ironic Army quotes at the beginning of chapters. This book will entertain those still tickled by M*A*S*H reruns or who enjoy poking fun at the U.S. military; otherwise, there’s nothing new here. (BookLife)
