Secret Desires

Credible and touching moments are sprinkled throughout Regen’s simple story about a young woman’s response to the ebbs and flows of life. There’s instant attraction when 23-year-old Margo Simmons visits Edward Master, a handsome 30-something widower, for advice on how to invest her inheritance. Though Margo finds herself desiring a relationship with Edward, she is not sure she can handle any more drama in her life. Margo is a sympathetic protagonist whose relationships with the people around her, especially her mother, reveal her thoughtfulness and sensitivity. The portrayal of Edward’s conflict—his attraction to Margo and his memories of his late wife that complicate a new relationship—is realistic and heartwarming. However, the lack of development in the characters and some overly convenient plot points make it difficult to fully engage with the story. Despite some hackneyed descriptions, Regen creates heat in the sex scenes between the two shy new lovers. The narrative is flat at times due to minimal description, but the short chapters and changing perspectives help move the plot forward. There’s enough heat and happiness in the story to keep undemanding romance fans satisfied. (BookLife)
