Sewing Pretty Little Things: How to Make Small Bags and Clutches from Fabric Remnants
Cherie Lee. Fox Chapel/Design Originals, $19.99 paper (128p) ISBN 978-1-57421-611-0
Experienced sewists who want to crank out a collection of small bags for holiday gifts will flock to this new title from the Taiwan-based author, who presents 16 patterns. Full-color illustrations of each step of the sewing process as well as of the finished projects will aid intermediate sewers; beginners won't find enough support for the first attempts here. The designs are decidedly feminine, with lots of calicos, flowers and lace on everything from the oddly named "Working Girl's Shoulder Bag" to a pretty "Classy Clutch" to a charming "Handy Wristlet." Lee's designs aren't simple, but they do look more finished and professional than many. Read carefully, as her instructions sometimes leave off minor, but important, details that make the difference between a fun or a grueling sewing experience. The decision on the publisher's part to use photographs that contain designs that won't be available until the sequel is published in late 2014 is an odd one, indeed, but the charm of the designs will allure. Full color photos; patterns included. (Nov. 1)
