The Justice Calling: Where Passion Meets Perseverance
Bethany Hanke Hoang and Kristen Deede Johnson. Brazos, $19.99 (240p) ISBN 978-1-58743-363-4
Hoang, director of the Institute for Biblical Justice in Washington D.C., and Johnson, associate professor of theology and Christian formation at Western Theological Seminary in Michigan, offer powerful insights, based in scripture and Christian teaching, to help Christians to live out Jesus’ teachings in a globalized, interconnected, but impersonal world. A focus on experience, biblical scholarship, and reflection runs throughout the book, with both Old and New Testaments drawn upon for guidance and wisdom. While the authors’ erudite scholarship shines through, it never dominates the readable text. Cutting through the scripture, together they are able to explain complex exegetical work with aplomb and present their conclusions clearly for those without a background in biblical studies. At times the transitions from one author’s work to the other are a bit clunky, but the sections are tied together by the message of returning to everyday practices involved in Christianity in order to ground ourselves in an equitable justice system. This book will especially appeal to young Christians who are searching for writing with some intellectual bite that speaks to their hunger for justice and faith. (Feb.)
