Drawing in Space
Harriet Russell. Princeton Architectural Press, $18.95 paper (64p) ISBN 978-1-61689-497-9
Russell walks readers through the solar system and beyond, using a mix of playful artwork, engaging facts, and prompts. Starting with the Big Bang, Russell goes on to discuss the planets, moon, stars, comets, and more; highlights include a conversation between a five-pointed star and a round one (“Real stars don’t have points,” the latter explains. “We are huge balls of burning gas”) and an equally entertaining monologue from unhappy dwarf planet Pluto. Whether comparing black holes to vacuum cleaners (“Draw some things being sucked in”) or creating a mix-and-match game involving the planets and their mythological namesakes, Russell skillfully melds humor, solid astronomical information, and a stylish design. Ages 6–8. (Mar.)
