The 28-Day Plan to Lose Weight, Increase Your Energy, and Reduce Disease

Jayson and Mira Calton. Rodale, $25.99 (384p) ISBN 978-1-62336-532-5

The Caltons (Rich Food, Poor Food) fell in love and married after her advanced osteoporosis improved following Mira’s adoption of Jayson’s micronutrient method. Encouraged by this success, the couple embarked on a six-year tour of over 135 countries to learn more about micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acids). They returned to the U.S. with a conclusion: one’s specific diet or country of residence is less important to one’s health than the amount of micronutrients in one’s food. According to the authors, there is a “silent global pandemic” of deficiency in these elements, the lack of which can contribute to such diseases as cancer and osteoporosis. The core problem, the Caltons claim, lies with modern food production and distribution methods, including factory farming, the use of GMOs, and long-distance transport, all of which rob foods of micronutrients, as does the increasing depletion of agricultural topsoil. After delivering this bad news in no uncertain terms, the authors offer a 28-day strategy for restoring the body. Whether or not avid dieters fully accept the dire warnings given here, they should appreciate this comprehensive plan for choosing locally grown, “rich” foods that provide a healthful “micronutrient bang for every delicious bite.” Agent: Celeste Fine, Sterling Lord Literistic.
