Plants from Pips: Pots of Plants for the Whole Family to Enjoy
Holly Farrell. Conran Octopus (Hachette, dist.), $14.99 (144p) ISBN 978-1-78472-103-9
In this delightful new book, garden writer and horticulturist Farrell opens a universe of possibilities for cultivating robust fruit-bearing plants in pots from pits that would otherwise be cast into the compost. Smartly laid out and replete with colorful photos and strategically organized bullet points, the book guides the average grower to success by means of simple steps. Each planting project includes its own page outlining needed equipment, method, care, and stats for successfully cultivating more than 30 fruit-bearers. The book also offers a creative guide for, among others, the resourceful parent looking for an enterprise for curious children who’ve eaten a peach and now wonder what to do with the pit—but be aware, the cultivation takes time. Farrell doesn’t say exactly how much time, but does provide a “patience” scale of one to three. Whether one is creating olive groves or a gooseberry bush, the book is accessible to even the most inexperienced gardener. All that is needed is a little patience. [em](Sept.)
