Let’s Make Some Great Art

In the spirit of Marcel Duchamp, Deuchars invites readers to integrate their own drawings into images loosely extrapolated from the work and style of famous artists (briefly profiled throughout), and to use these images as a foundation for further exploration. Following a capsule introduction to Louise Bourgeois, best known for her “Maman” spider sculptures, are instructions for creating blown-ink spiders using straws; a brief bio of Magritte is joined by exercises that encourage unexpected, out-of-the-box thinking. The profiles are intelligently paired with various experiments involving color and technique, while helping readers understand what it means to think, see, and create like an artist. Ages 9–12.
