Child of Galaxies
Blake Nuto, illus. by Charlotte Ager. Flying Eye, $16.95 (40p) ISBN 978-1-912497-42-3
“Your body was made/ from the stuff/ of the stars,” Nuto writes. “You’re a child of/ galaxies dreaming.” Newcomer Ager draws large, soft figures of children floating through space as text invites kids to consider themselves part of the cosmos. Addressing readers in rousing affirmations (“Though your part may be small,/ You are part of it all”), Nuto encourages connection and gives readers permission to exist on the universe’s timeline (“So be like the stars, in no hurry”). Full-bleed spreads featuring stars, moons, and planets have the feel of silk screen art, making the far reaches of the universe seem intimate and homey. Looking at things on a cosmic scale teaches philosophical calm and poise, and this creation welcomes young voyagers as they attempt it. Ages 3–5. (June)
