Gr 3-5-An introduction to the pre-Columbian history of Mexico through historical fiction, this is a flip-over volume with two separate narratives in one book, with glossaries, maps, and time lines in the middle. Escalante Gonzalbo offers an introduction that sets the historical context for both stories. In ""Los cazadores"" (""The Hunters""), an aging medicine man chooses a young man to train as his successor. In ""Xoi Yuun, un nino olmeca"" (""An Olmec Boy""), written by Carlos Brockman and illustrated by Felipe D valos, a young boy travels with his father to watch the preparations for an important Olmec feast. Both stories are fortified with a great deal of historical material, as well as detailed and informative watercolor illustrations. Inset boxes provide further details on specific topics. A large two-page map of the Mexican peninsula, along with a diagram of a typical Olmec village, separates the two tales. Recommended for school libraries and classroom use. M.O.B.
