Trucking in English

Carolyn Steele. Amazon Digital, $3.54 e-book (356p) ASIN B00AAJ4BCO

Steele, a British émigré to Canada, takes a warm, meandering ride along Canadian and American highways in this memoir of life as a long-haul truck driver. Once her son became an adult, she decided to pursue a lifelong curiosity with driving trucks. Steele enrolled in trucking school in Canada, passed her exams, and began work. She learns that much of the old sexism of trucking has disappeared, and explains how trucking laws fluctuate between countries and from state to state. After some time on the road, she feels that trucking full-time is too exhausting for someone her age and goes part-time. Steele is an affable narrator, and her experience both as a rookie trucker and an immigrant give her an excellent outsider perspective. That said, the book itself is a long haul; there are long sections where nothing happens, with brief exciting moments to punctuate the tedium. Readers will learn exhaustive details about the paperwork involved in trucking, but ultimately wish for something a little livelier. (BookLife)
