Served with a Side of Dessert

Illustrator Sophie Blackall and H. Ashton Marsh School librarian Rose Hagar made blackberry fool, the featured dessert in Blackall’s recent picture book A Fine Dessert, written by Emily Jenkins (Random/Schwartz & Wade) during the illustrator’s school visit on April 23. Blackall spoke to the kindergarten through fourth grade students at the Absecon, N.J., school, and made the recipe with the fourth grade class. ‘Tree’ Expression

Tom Lichtenheld recently visited The Reading Bug in San Carlos, Calif., while on tour for I Wish You More, written by Amy Krouse Rosenthal (Chronicle). He was invited to autograph the store’s tree, which has signatures from many illustrators and authors. But, where those before him saw leaves, he saw an elephant.

I Spy

On April 29, author Stuart Gibbs hit the bestseller list for his Spy School series. Gibbs was in the Simon & Schuster offices preparing for the Edgar Awards (he was nominated for his book Space Case) when his editor, Kristin Ostby, came by to congratulate him. Dressed to the nines, Gibbs hadn’t yet gotten around to putting his shoes on. The latest book in the Spy School series, Evil Spy School, released earlier this month.

‘Woof’s’ the Word

Spencer Quinn, author of Woof (Scholastic) was one of 10 featured authors at the New England Independent Booksellers Association’s All About the Books! author readings program at the First Parish Church in Cambridge, Mass., on April 29.
