Among the titles hitting bookshelves next week are a YA retelling of A Thousand and One Nights, a magic-suffused middle-grade novel, a picture book underdog tale from a Caldecott Medalist, and Lane Smith’s first novel.

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh. Putnam, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-399-17161-1. This buzzed-about-debut novel retells A Thousand and One Nights with a twist: the king executes his brides nightly to stave off a curse, and when 16-year-old Shazi is taken as his betrothed, her plan to save her life may come at the cost of others.

Bayou Magic by Jewell Parker Rhodes. Little, Brown, $17; ISBN 978-0-316-22484-0. Coretta Scott King Honor author Rhodes follows up Ninth Ward with a middle-grade novel in which 10-year-old Maddy relocates to the Louisiana bayou and is swept up in the mystery of local folklore. Rhodes recently discussed the book in her speech at Children’s Institute 3.

Troto and the Trucks by Uri Shulevitz. FSG/Ferguson, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-374-30080-7. The latest from the Caldecott Medalist is the underdog story of a little green car in the desert, and all the various vehicular characters he encounters.

Return to Augie Hobble by Lane Smith. Roaring Brook, $16.99; ISBN 978-1-62672-054-1. The Caldecott Honor illustrator of The Stinky Cheese Man and others releases his first novel, in which a young artist who has flunked his art class must work at a run-down amusement park for the summer. The book earned a starred review from PW.
