Books hitting shelves next week include nonfiction for teens from an award-winning author, three picture books (including two debuts and the first collaboration between two creators), the follow-up to a bestselling middle-grade series, the latest from a classic children’s author, a teen’s take on bullying, and a YA that melds realism and fantasy.

Battle of the Bulge by Rick Atkinson. Holt, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-627-79113-7. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of nonfiction for adults offers up an account of the pivotal WWII battle for young readers.

Boats for Papa by Jessixa Bagley. Roaring Brook/Porter, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-62672-039-8. Debut author-illustrator Bagley offers a sweet story about a young beaver who paints driftwood boats to send to his absent father. PW gave the book a starred review.

The Princess and the Pony by Kate Beaton. Scholastic/Levine, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-545-63708-4. Beaton, the popular comic artist for adults via her webcomic Hark! a Vagrant, offers her first picture book, featuring a young warrior princess who receives a fat pony for her birthday instead of the noble warrior steed she wanted. Star Wars Jedi Academy #3: The Phantom Bully by Jeffrey Brown. Scholastic, $12.99; ISBN 978-0-545-62126-7. The popular comic artist returns with a new installment in his series for young readers set in the Star Wars universe.

Diary of a Mad Brownie by Bruce Coville, illus. by Paul Kidby. Random, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-385-39247-1. The latest book from the prolific children’s author follows an odd couple on madcap adventures. The story of tidy, 150-year-old brownie Angus and messy human 12-year-old girl Alex is told through text messages, verse, and diary entries, all with the author’s signature humor. The Survival Guide to Bullying by Aija Mayrock. Scholastic, $9.99; ISBN 978-0-545-86053-6. Mayrock is a teen who experienced severe bullying in school, and turned her experiences into a book for other teens to manage the experience. Read PW’s story behind the book.

Jampires by Sarah McIntyre and David O’Connell. Scholastic/Fickling, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-545-81663-2. A mystery-in-verse is afoot when a donut has been drained of its filling. The popular U.K.-based author and illustrator team up for a playful picture book primed for storytime.

Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older. Scholastic/Levine, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-545-59161-4. Older’s YA debut follows teen Sierra Santiago all over Brooklyn and Manhattan, as she works on a mural, navigates school, and family, and becomes embroiled in a plot to save the world after sustaining a mysterious attack. The novel netted a starred review from PW.
