Hitting bookshelves next week are a picture book featuring a grumpy bear turned unwitting mother, a visually driven pseudo-Gothic middle grade story, and a novel in which two teens confront living in spite of familial terminal illness.

Love Is Everywhere by Jim Benton. Scholastic/Cartwheel, $7.99; ISBN 978-0-545-64788-5. This board book offers up a cartoonish personification of love alongside silly verses.

Queen by Aimee Carter. Harlequin Teen, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-373-21161-6. The third volume in Carter’s dystopian Blackcoat Rebellion series follows protagonist Kitty as she works to dismantle a corrupt government.

Love Is My Favorite Thing by Emma Chichester Clark. Penguin/Paulsen, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-399-17503-9. Clark’s rambunctious dog, Plum, whose exploits have been chronicled on the author’s blog as well as in a recent adult title, Plumdog, makes her picture book debut.

Warren the 13th and the All-Seeing Eye by Tania del Rio, illus. by Will Staehle. Quirk, $16.95; ISBN 978-1-59474-803-5. Based on a concept created by book designer/illustrator Staehle, this visually driven novel pulls from literary and visual sources that include a Victorian-style two-column text layout, and intricate illustrations in red and black.

Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins. Disney-Hyperion, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-4847-3088-1. This picture book tells the story about a grumpy bear who becomes an unwitting mother to a newly hatched flock of geese.

Rules for 50/50 Chances by Kate McGovern. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-374-30158-3. This debut novel investigates mortality, romance, family, race, and class when Rose and Caleb meet at a “Walk for Rare Genes,” and appreciate not just each other’s company but also the chance to talk honestly about having a seriously ill family member.

Waddle! Waddle! by James Proimos. Scholastic Press, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-545-41846-1. The picture book about three penguins with their own talents, and an affinity for belly slides, earned a starred review from PW.
