Ann Kelley at Random House/Schwartz & Wade has acquired Sarah Miller's The Dionne Quintuplets, a YA narrative nonfiction book about the world's first recorded set of surviving quintuplets who rose to fame in Canada in the 1930s. Publication is slated for fall 2018; Wendy Schmalz at Wendy Schmalz Agency negotiated the deal for world rights.

Zareen Jaffery at Simon & Schuster has bought Cristin Terrill's Here Lies Daniel Tate, a YA thriller based on a true story about a missing boy who reappears years after vanishing without a trace. His reunion with his overjoyed family should be the perfect happy ending, except for two things: the boy may not be who he seems, and someone in the family is hiding a secret... one that could make him disappear again, this time forever. Publication is scheduled for 2017; Diana Fox at Fox Literary did the deal for North American rights.

Kaylan Adair at Candlewick has acquired Paula Garner's Relative Strangers, in which a teenage girl discovers that she spent part of her early childhood in foster care due to her mother's alcoholism, and sets out to reconnect with that family, only to develop feelings for her former foster brother. Publication is projected for spring 2018; Molly Jaffa at Folio Literary Management/Folio Jr. brokered the deal for world English rights.

Margaret Raymo at HMH has bought world English rights to Tuutikki Tolonen's middle grade novel, Monster Nanny, the story of a contemporary family whose daily routines are turned upside-down when a hairy, swamp-smelling creature said to be specializing in childcare shows up at their doorstep. Publication is set for fall 2017. Elina Ahlback at Elina Ahlback Literary Agency negotiated the deal; rights have been sold in 10 territories.

Laura Godwin at Henry Holt has acquired Newbery Honor author Eugene Yelchin's The Spy Runner, an illustrated middle grade novel set in the 1950s in which 12-year-old Jake gets caught in Red Scare paranoia when his mother takes in a peculiar lodger who may or may not be a Russian spy. Publication is scheduled for winter 2018; Steven Malk at Writers House brokered the deal for world rights.

Michael Strother at S&S/Aladdin has acquired a middle grade novel by debut author Robert Imfeld, who is on the Wimpy Kid marketing team at Abrams. A Guide to the Other Side, about a 13-year-old medium named Baylor Boscoe who does not like ghosts, launches a new series. Publication starts in fall 2016; Daniel Lazar at Writers House did the two-book deal for North American rights.

Ariane Szu-Tu at National Geographic Children's has bought Sarah Albee's Dog Days of History, a look at the relationship between humans and dogs throughout history. Publication is planned for January 2018; Caryn Wiseman at the Andrea Brown Literary Agency brokered the deal for world rights.


Kira Lynn at Kane Miller has acquired Scribble & Author, a picture book by Miri Leshem-Pelly. The book takes the form of a dialogue between Scribble, the main character, and Author, who created her. Publication is slated for January 2018; Anna Olswanger of Olswanger Literary negotiated the deal for North American rights.

Craig Cohen and Jordan Nielsen at POW! have bought Dustrats!, a picture book by Spanish debut author-illustrator Adrià Regordosa. The story is an adventure featuring a gallant cat, a baby in danger, mischievous creatures called Dustrats, and rooms in a house that transform into new worlds. Publication is scheduled for spring 2017; Clelia Gore of Martin Literary Management brokered the deal for world rights.

Karen Greenberg at Knopf has acquired world rights for Mia Moves Out, a picture book by Miranda Paul (l.), illustrated by Paige Keiser, about a girl who wants to find a space of her own after her parents bring home a new brother. Publication is planned for fall 2018; Karen Grencik at Red Fox Literary represented the author and Rosemary Stimola of Stimola Literary Studio represented the illustrator.

Liz Bicknell at Candlewick has acquired in a multi-house auction Jon Scieszka's DaDa Goose's Book of Complete Nonsense, turning the author's anarchic sensibility to another pillar of English literature: nursery rhymes. An illustrator has not yet been named, and a release date has not been set. Steven Malk of Writers House brokered the deal for world English rights.

Melanie Nolan at Knopf has bought LIFEL1K3, first in a new YA trilogy by Illuminae co-author Jay Kristoff, about a teen's fight to survive in a world where humans, androids, and machines are engaged in a deadly battle for dominance, only to learn that her own identity may be in question. Publication starts in spring 2018; Josh Adams at Adams Literary negotiated the three-book deal for North American rights.

Kristin Daly at HarperCollins/Balzer + Bray has acquired a currently untitled fantasy YA duology by Sara Raasch. The story was inspired by the Spanish Inquisition and the golden age of piracy, and follows a woman seeking justice, a tortured pirate looking for redemption, and an ambitious prince out for power. Publication is slated for fall 2017; Brady Watson at New Leaf Literary represented Raasch in the deal for world English rights.

Daniel Ehrenhaft at Soho Teen has bought Cecily von Ziegesar's YA novel Dark Horses. The novel follows the relationship that develops between an unruly teenage girl and a failed racehorse, after the two meet at an equine therapy camp. Publication is scheduled for September 2016; Eric Brown at the law firm Franklin, Weinrib, Rudell & Vassallo brokered the sale on behalf of von Ziegesar, and Rights People is handling foreign sales for the book on behalf of Soho.

Daniel Ehrenhaft at Soho Teen has acquired world English rights to a YA noir novel by Michelle Gagnon called Unearthly Things. A retelling ofJane Eyre with a supernatural twist, the book is set in the world of San Francisco's debutante society and follows an orphaned teenager beginning a new life with a mysterious adoptive family. It's scheduled for April 2017; Stephanie Kip Rostan at Levine Greenberg Rostan Literary did the deal.

Anna Roberto at Feiwel and Friends has bought HelloGiggles blogger Kerry Winfrey's debut novel, Love and Other Alien Experiences, originally published as an ebook by The Studio, a Paper Lantern Lit imprint. The story follows a self-described “optimistic” agoraphobe as she forms a plan to be crowned homecoming queen while struggling with loss, first love, and the realization of what home really means. Publication is scheduled for spring 2017; Stephen Barbara at Inkwell Management negotiated the two-book deal for North American rights.

T.S. Ferguson at Harlequin Teen has acquired world rights to Dead Little Mean Girl by Hillary Monahan, writing as Eva Darrows. Pitched as a deconstruction of the mean girl trope, the story follows unapologetic geek girl Emma whose nightmare of a new stepsister, Quinn, makes her life, and the lives of everyone around her, a living hell. Emma must come out of her shell to stand up to Quinn, but when Quinn dies, Emma realizes there was more to her sister than just the mean girl image she projected. The book is scheduled to publish in winter 2017; Miriam Kriss at Irene Goodman Literary Agency brokered the deal.

Jennifer Ung at Simon Pulse has preempted Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman, in which a half-Japanese teen fails to get into art school away from home, leaving her to navigate through social anxiety and micro-aggressions in a small town. And as she reconnects with her childhood crush and learns to stand up to her self-centered mother, she grows to love the part of her heritage she was never taught to appreciate. Publication is set for fall 2017, with a second book to follow in fall 2018; Penny Moore at FinePrint Literary Management negotiated the two-book deal for world English rights.

Krista Vitola at Delacorte has bought world rights to screenwriter Todd Calgi Gallicano's new middle grade series. The first novel, Guardians of the Gryphon's Claw, is about an average 12-year-old boy who is haunted by a dream of a mythical gryphon and uncovers an ancient secret that will forever change the way he sees the world. Publication is set for summer 2017; Lacy Lalene Lynch and Dabney Rice at Dupree, Miller & Associates did the deal.

Connie Hsu at Roaring Brook has acquired Marcus Emerson's middle grade graphic novel Recess Warriors, about an epic battle (with cowboys, ninjas, zombies, and pirates) that unfolds during recess, as well as The Super Life of Finch Finley, about a normal kid who goes undercover at a school for superheroes to expose a secret villain. Publication is slated for 2017 and 2018 respectively; Daniel Lazar at Writers House negotiated the deal for North American rights.

Cassandra Pelham at Scholastic/Graphix has bought Graveyard Shakes, a middle-grade graphic novel by Laura Terry. This debut features a pair of sisters who get caught up in the world of the graveyard on their boarding school's property, when they meet a quirky necromancer who needs one last ingredient for the spell keeping his son alive: a child's life. Publication is scheduled for 2017; Bernadette Baker-Baughman at Victoria Sanders & Associates brokered the deal for world rights.

Alyson Day at HarperCollins has acquired world rights to a new untitled picture book by Esphyr Slobodkina with Ann Marie Mulhearn Sayer (l.), continuing the adventures of the peddler and those mischievous monkeys featured in the classic Caps for Sale. Publication is slated for summer 2017; Kirsten Hall at Catbird Productions represented Sayer and the Slobodkina Foundation.

Alison Weiss at Sky Pony Press has bought world rights to Kayla Harren's debut wordless picture book, Mary Had a Little Lizard, chronicling a day of mischief when a lizard sneaks into his human's backpack and hitches a ride to school. Publication is slated for fall 2017; the author-illustrator is unagented.
