We Need Diverse Books, the grassroots organization-cum-nonprofit that emerged one year ago on the eve of the debut BookCon fan fest, continues to tweak its organizational structure.

WNDB librarian Dhonielle Clayton and WNDB social media manager Jennifer Baker have now joined the executive team, thus expanding the number of senior v-ps to seven under the leadership of president Ellen Oh. Clayton will be responsible for overseeing the Walter Award for published authors, the WNDB Booktalking Kits for schools, libraries, and bookstores that are being produced in conjunction with School Library Journal, and for the organization’s Summer Reading series, produced in collaboration with Smithsonian Dragon; and Baker will oversee all social media outreach and chair the first Children’s Literature Diversity Festival, scheduled for July 2016 in Washington, D.C.

Changes have also been made to WNDB’s advisory committee of multicultural authors. Gene Luen Yang, whose work, American Born Chinese, was the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award and the first to win a Printz Award, has joined the 10-member advisory committee. Pura Belpré Medal recipient Meg Medina, who has been involved with WNDB from the beginning, most notably as a member of its executive committee, has moved from the executive team to the advisory committee, where she is now board chair. Besides Medina and Yang, advisory committee members include Jacqueline Woodson, Grace Lin, Matt de la Peña, Cynthia Leitich Smith, Cindy Pon, Tim Federle, Linda Sue Park, and Christopher Myers.
