Fifty years ago, in our June 13, 1966, issue, we ran an obituary for Blanche Wolf Knopf, “cofounder, with her husband, Alfred A. Knopf, of Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., and president of the company since 1957.” She had died at 71 the preceding week. The subject of a biography that came out this April, The Lady with the Borzoi by Laura Claridge (read our review at publishersweekly.com/blanchereview), Knopf, according to our obit, “expressed resentment that women were excluded from positions of importance in the ‘man’s world’ of American book publishing. Once, when a women’s college invited her to speak about the future of women in publishing, she declined the invitation on the ground that there was ‘no future worth mentioning.’ ” Fortunately, many of the top execs and editors in the book biz have since proved her wrong.
