Unit sales of print books rose 6% in the week ended Feb. 8, 2015, compared to the similar week last year, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. The juvenile nonfiction category led the sales increase, with units up 15%, as the segment benefitted from some new hot sellers. Topping sales in the week was the backlist title There’s No Place Like Space, by Tish Rabe and Aristides Ruiz, which sold more than 8,500 copies. A new title landed at #3: Kid President’s Guide to Being Awesome, by Robby Novak and Brad Montague, sold over 7,000 copies in its first week. The juvenile fiction category had a 6% increase in week six of 2015, compared to the week ended Feb. 9, 2014, as Random House’s annual Dr. Seuss promotion began (five of the top 10 juvenile fiction books were Seuss titles). Adult fiction sales rose 4%, driven by a number of titles that have been on this list. At 23,000 copies, week six sales of the movie tie-in edition of E.L. James’ s Fifty Shades of Grey were up 96% over the previous week, while the original edition of Shades had a 43% increase and sold over 18,000 copies. Adult nonfiction sales rose 6%, year over year, and the top three spots were once again claimed by various editions of Chris Kyle’s American Sniper, which sold a total of about 108,000 copies.
