Unit sales of print books fell 9% in the week ended June 14, 2015, compared to the similar week last year, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. The results are skewed by the fact that Father’s Day fell on June 15 last year, one week earlier than in 2015. Indeed, the two adult segments were both down in the week, with very few new books making a splash. The most notable adult debut was in fiction, where All the Single Ladies by Dorothea Benton Frank sold more than 13,000 copies, placing it in at #9 on the adult fiction list. Overall, units in adult fiction were down 9% in the week compared to 2014. Nonfiction books are popular Father’s Day gifts, and because the holiday came earlier last year, sales in the segment were down 10% in the week. No new books cracked the top 30 sellers in the category, and David McCollough’s The Wright Brothers grabbed first place from The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, selling more than 24,000 copies. Juvenile fiction sales were down again, falling 13% in the week. Jimmy Fallon did well, as the hardcover and board book editions of Your Baby’s First Word Will Be Dada each sold more than 21,000 copies, putting them at #4 and #5, respectively, in their first week on sale. Unit sales in juvenile nonfiction rose 9%, spurred by Johanna Basford’s The Secret Garden, which sold more than 35,000 copies in the week, a jump of 260% over the previous week.
