Unit sales of print books rose a solid 8% in the week ended July 5, 2015, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. Every category posted a sales increase over the comparable week in 2014, led by the juvenile nonfiction segment, which had a 20% gain. Hitler’s Last Days by Bill O’Reilly led the segment with more than 11,000 copies sold, while Johanna Basford’s two coloring books sold a combined 15,000 copies in the week. The adult nonfiction segment also had a double-digit unit rise in the week, with sales up 13% over week 27 of 2014. The Official SAT Study Guide was the top-seller, moving more than 21,000 copies in its first week on sale. A Time for Truth by Ted Cruz was another book that had a good debut, selling almost 12,000 copies. Sales in adult fiction increased 7% in the week, driven by the still-strong sales of Grey by E.L. James (about 164,000 copies sold in the week), plus a plethora of new titles. Daniel Silva’s The English Spy had the strongest debut, selling almost 38,000 copies in hardcover, good enough for second place on the adult fiction list. Mass market paperback editions of Robyn Carr’s A New Hope and Patricia Cornwell’s Flesh and Blood sold about 32,000 and 26,000 copies, respectively, putting the titles in fourth and fifth place on the fiction list. Juvenile fiction sales rose 9% in the week compared to the week ended July 6, 2014, with John Green’s Paper Towns landing in the first and third spots on the juvenile fiction list. With the Paper Towns film set for a July 24 release, the two editions combined to sell 66,000 copies.
