The University of Hawaiˈi at Mānoa (UH Mānoa) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director and Publisher (Director) of the University of Hawai‘i Press (UH Press). The successful candidate has an exciting opportunity to lead UH Press as it continues to fulfill its mission of advancing and disseminating high-quality scholarship in the humanities and natural and social sciences in the Asia-Pacific region. The Director will work with current technologies and models to sustain scholarly communication at a time of tremendous change in publishing and bookselling. UH Mānoa has the strongest commitment to and investment in the study of Asia and the Pacific of any research university in the country, and the vibrant publishing activity of UH Press is an essential component of that investment.

UH Press was founded in 1947 and has grown from a largely regional press to one of the most respected publishers of Asian and Pacific studies titles in the world. Currently, UH Press publishes 60–70 new books and publishes and distributes 20 journals annually in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. It has more than 1,300 book titles in print, with sales in excess of $3 million annually. In addition to publishing books and journals under its own imprints, UH Press markets and distributes a range of titles from local educational organizations, University departments, and scholarly and educational publishers in the United States, England, the Netherlands, Denmark, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, and New Zealand. Its international sales representation program, East-West Export Books, sells books throughout Asia and the Pacific for UH Press and 58 North American university presses and scholarly publishers.

Supervising 28 professionals, the Director oversees all planning, fiscal, editorial, production, marketing, sales, and fundraising activities of UH Press. The Director must be an innovative leader and communicator with a thorough understanding of the diverse challenges facing scholarly communications today—challenges that involve not only academic publishers, but also libraries, universities, scholars, and booksellers. In addition to supervising day-to-day operations and activities, the Director will be expected to advance UH Press’ development of electronic publishing, foster and enhance financial support from foundations and other sources, and work with University faculty and administrators to further the Press’ role in expanding the University’s academic objectives and reputation.
