Acquisitions Editor
DIVISION:
NASW Press

MAJOR
FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for the acquisition and project development of print and digital products for NASW Press. Conduct research to expand the domestic and international titles in the book program. Acquire book authors, proposals, manuscripts, and reviewers.

BASIC DUTIES &
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Recruit authors for submission of book proposals and manuscripts

a. Research prospective authors and related book titles, develop and maintain an author contact list
b. Build a strong network within the social work community to generate new proposals and identify specific subject areas and projects for acquisitions
c. Maintain solid knowledge of competitive titles by other publishers
d. Sustain positive relationships with current and prospective authors
e. Attend professional conferences and meetings as required (up to 25% travel)

Procure reviewers for the NASW Press book program

a. Solicit and initiate contact prospective reviewers

Oversee Acquisition Projects from Proposal to Author Agreement

a. Evaluate proposals and manuscripts for their publishing potential
b. Coordinate the submission, evaluation, and review process for book proposals and manuscripts
c. Oversee the Book Committee during proposal review process
d. Present reviews to authors and notify them of accept/reject decision
e. Work with authors to establish and meet their manuscript delivery date
f. Keep organized and accurate records/files of each title, including book contracts
g. Prepare contracts for invited authors

Developmental Editing

a. Assist authors with developmental editing for proposals and manuscripts
b. Ensure that goals established for each title are met
c. Review and recommend reorganization of proposals and manuscripts, as needed
d. Provide comments on voice and writing level, as needed
e. Follow the manuscript through the editorial process including various rounds of edits

MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills: Requires knowledge of book acquisitions and publishing process. Must have good editing and organizational skills. Requires excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Must have ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Knowledge: Requires a command of the English language. Must have knowledge of editing and publishing procedures and processes. Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent relevant work experience.

Experience: Requires at least 2 years of related work experience and proven experience in publishing.
