THE OPPORTUNITY
DSC is a nonprofit, mission driven, research based organization that began in 1980. Today, DSC seeks a Director of Communications at the start of a bold, new initiative in its 34th year. With an innovative new product line and a robust sales strategy, DSC is well positioned to make an increased impact on the K-8 educational market.

The Communications Director has a strategic role on the leadership team. With a heavy emphasis on brand management, the Director develops the messages and implements a communications plan that includes print collateral and online activities and will set and guide the strategy for the website, public relations and print collateral that consistently articulate the DSC mission. The ideal candidate has a strong background in education, educational publishing, or child centered social services.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions:
• Manage company brand, communications and public relations to consistently articulate the DSC mission
• Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan across the network’s discreet audiences in collaboration with the DSC team, funders and other constituents
• Develop and maintain a national presence for DSC
• Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and results in measurable action. Decide who, where, and when to disseminate content.
• Manage the development, distribution and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral, including but not limited to, newsletters, e-newsletters, brochures, social media and the DSC website
• Coordinate webpage maintenance to ensure that new and consistent information (articles links, stories and events) is posted regularly
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with media contacts.
• Manage all media relations and maximize media opportunities
• Mentor and lead the team member responsible for DSC’s website administration and coordination
• Regularly test the effectiveness of communications activities
• Interpret and use metrics to make decisions, influence messaging
• Coordinate and organize annual meetings that engage the network’s discreet audiences

QUALIFICATIONS
• 10 years experience in educational publishing, sales, promotion, public relations, or marketing
• Is an active social media user with an established audience
• Experience with website management, push technologies, and social media communication
• Experience developing and executing promotion campaigns
• Imagination, creativity and ability to think outside of the conventional box
• Knowledge of K–8 educational marketing issues
• Project planning and management experience; demonstrates grace with schedules, budgets, and relationships with co-workers.
• Strong writing and public speaking skills
• Personal skills for developing and maintaining professional relationships and solving problems
• Computer skills: MacIntosh, Internet, FileMaker, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Fastrack, OmniGraffle
• Data savvy–ability to analyze marketing data to influence messaging
• A graphic eye: Appreciation and talent with color, line, and style
