In an exclusive to PW, Viking has announced a May 9 national laydown date for O.J. trial prosecutor Marcia Clark's Without a Doubt, written with Teresa Carpenter. On the same day, Clark's interview with Barbara Walters will air on "20/20," followed by a one-on-one interview with Oprah on Monday, May 12, and a three-part interview on NBC's "Today" show beginning Tuesday, May 13. Clark will also do other major media, as well as a 12-14 city national tour, to include signings at bookstores, and will be supported by a $500,000 advertising and marketing budget. Viking Penguin director of subsidiary rights Hal Fessenden will be offering first serial rights to major weekly magazines at the end of this month. The book, both a Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club Super Release, will have a simultaneous Penguin Audio, narrated by Clark.

The original February 20 order deadline for the book was extended two more weeks, and Viking spokesperson Patty Kelly told PW that Penguin's new management made the decision to cut the announced 1,000,000 first printing in half and go back to press as needed when the publicity hits. Barnes &Noble spokesperson Jennifer Wolfertz told PW that the chain has placed a "bestseller" advance order.
