Last November, Dateline NBC aired an intriguing segment about Monty Roberts, a real-life "horse whisperer" who has learned a subtle physical language that he uses to communicate with these animals. In the words of Tom Perry, assistant publicity director at Random House -- which today is publishing The Man Who Listens to Horses -- "he understands them and they understand him." Roberts's book, which lands at #14 on PW's nonfiction list, already has 120,000 copies in print following two trips to press. The author's unusual abilities were profiled in People magazine in April; book publicity includes guest shots on Good Morning America plus NPR's Fresh Air and All Things Considered. In addition, Dateline NBC repeated Roberts's segment last Friday with two minutes of new footage. Tonight in New York City, the author will perform the first of a number of remarkable demonstrations that will be part of his cross-country tour: he'll persuade two wild horses to accept rider, bridle and saddle in 30 minutes.
