Angela's Assets
Daisy Maryles -- 9/8/97
It's been an amazing year for Frank McCourt's moving memoir Angela's Ashes, which is coming up to its first year anniversary on PW's bestseller list. The book, published last September, has certainly come a long way from its 27,500-copy first printing. According to Scribner, the Pulitzer-Prize winner now has a grand total of 1.5 million copies in print after 47 trips to press. Scribner publicity director Patricia Eisemann notes that "each time I give Frank an update, he laughs out of sheer amazement that people care this much." A recent four-page Newsweek feature, a front-page Sunday New York Times story on McCourt's Irish city of Limerick and a re-airing of a CBS Sunday Morning segment has kept the book in the nonfiction lead. It's also a nice birthday present for McCourt, who turned 67 on August 19.
