New on PW's monthly religion list this week is Thich Nhat Hanh's Living Buddha, Living Christ, published in a Riverhead trade paper edition this month. Riverhead's hardcover, published in 1995, has 110,000 copies in print and sells a steady 1000 per month; the publisher printed 70,000 copies of the paper edition. The Vietnamese Buddhist monk has authored more than 75 books, of which 35 titles are still in print. Nhat Hanh's Being Peace (1987) has sold 250,000 for Parallax Press, a small house in the Bay Area that has published 27 of his books. Peace is Every Step (1991) has 250,000 in print for Bantam; Miracle of Mindfulness (1976) has sold 185,000 for Beacon Press in cloth, paper and gift edition combined. Nhat Hanh is on an eight-city tour of the U.S. and on one of his first stops, a weekend retreat at U.C. Santa Barbara, he drew more than 1500 attendees. Other stops on the tour include Berkeley on Sept. 17, L.A. (Oct. 7), New York City (Oct. 18) and Washington D.C. (Oct. 26).
