New Eye on Publishing for New York Times
John F. Baker -- 9/22/97
Martin Arnold, who has spent much of the past 20 years behind the scenes at the New York Times as an editor of the Sunday Magazine and later as the first editor in charge of the paper's media coverage, is to have a new job in which, among other things, he will write a weekly column on the publishing business.
Arnold told PW that the column, which will be about 800 words and will debut in mid-October, will be entirely separate from Doreen Carvajal's news coverage of the book scene. Carvajal reports to the paper's Business editors, and Arnold, whose new title will be senior editor of culture, will oversee the second page in the Times's new daily Arts section. He will also be responsible for the Critics' Notebooks (including occasional contributions from the paper's daily book reviewers), Arts Abroad and Arts in America. Announcing Arnold's new job in a memo to staff, Style editor John Darnton said he expected that the new column "will keep us up to date and put us ahead of the competition on developments in that shifting industry."

Arnold said he had not yet come up with a title for the new column, but he was excited by the idea of being a regular writer again, and was very interested in the book beat. Earlier, as the paper’s first media editor for nearly eight years, he supervised the work of a string of publishing correspondents, including Edwin McDowell, Roger Cohen, Esther Fein, Mary Tabor and Sarah Lyall. As for relations with Carvajal, he said, "I'm sure we’ll exchange tips and ideas," and added, "I'm a big fan of hers." At this point, said Arnold, he was still pondering the direction the column would take.
