A Veritable 'Flood Tide'
Daisy Maryles -- 9/29/97
Clive Cussler makes it to the #2 spot on PW's fiction list this week, his highest ever for first-week sales. And while Flood Tide, Cussler's 14th adventure starring Dirk Pitt, did lead the charts at both Barnes &Noble and Waldenbooks, it was Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain that was outdistancing it in independent stores and at many regional chains across the country during the week that marked the end of summer. Cussler is in the midst of a seven-city tour (Ph nix, Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Diego, L.A., Denver) and features in Entertainment Weekly and Time are coming up, as well as a segment on CBS This Morning. Simon &Schuster's first printing was 525,000, but a 25,000-copy second printing, quickly followed by a 50,000 third printing, were ordered to keep up with demand.
