New Strings for Rice's Bow
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 11/3/97
Ghosts, not vampires or witches, populate the newest bestseller from Anne Rice, Violin, which has one of the author's favorite dates as its official pub date -- October 31. National laydown was October 15 and the first printing was 400,000 copies, not quite the earlier announced 750,000. An alternative-radio promotion ran in 22 markets for most of October, featuring Violin giveaways, and an hourlong special (aired on Halloween weekend, of course) featured Tori Amos, Courtney Love and Rice reading from the author's books. Barnes &Noble will cross-promote with its music departments, where there will be stanchions featuring the book and Leilia Josefowitz's CD Violin for Anne Rice, just released by Phillips Records. More ads are planned, including TV ads during the first week of November on Good Morning America and on Melrose Place in the top eight markets during the week of November 24, plus radio ads for the week of December 1.
