Net Prophet
Calvin Reid -- 11/4/97
It will come as no surprise that digital theorist, entrepreneur and cyberspace cheerleader Esther Dyson's much awaited new book, Release 2.0: A Design for Living in the Digital Age (Broadway Books, $25) comes complete with its own website. The site has the usual amenities; excerpts, surveys, links and a series of discussion forums that Broadway Books publicist Jennifer Prost expects to be very busy. "For such an intellectual," Prost said happily, "she's as popular as a movie star. We can't keep up with the media requests." And the busier the forums the better, said Prost, because Broadway already has an "upgrade" planned for the book's trade paper edition, Release 2.1, due next year, that will incorporate material from the discussion topics. Nine topics, one each week, are scheduled, and discussions on work, communities and education have already begun, with Dyson and guests participating. The site also features a sample of the book presented in Trellix, an innovative frames-based Web interface devised by Dan Bricklin that BDD New Media director Jonathan Guttenberg called "a different way to maneuver through text on the Web."
