A Dunne Deal
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 11/24/97
Recent visitors to Los Angeles might have seen 4'x6' illuminated posters in the city's bus shelters with the headline "The Trial of the Century Isn't Over Until It's Dunne." That was just one of the promotions Crown implemented to launch Dominick Dunne's Another City, Not My Own: A Novel in the Form of a Memoir when it did a one-day laydown of the book on November 12, with a 300,000-copy first printing. That was preceded by lots of publicity buzz, including a Time write-up, a strong review by Jeffrey Toobin (author of the bestselling Run of His Life) in the New Yorker and a front-page Life Section interview in USA Today. The day after laydown, Good Morning America did two segments on the book the same day; the author also appeared on Larry King Live and did a radio satellite tour that continued over several days. Vanity Fair readers followed Dunne's monthly coverage of the O.J. trial in the author's "Letter from Los Angeles" feature. As some readers know, the Simpson trial bore unfortunate parallels to Dunne's personal life. The first L.A. murder trial the author attended was 13 years earlier, for the man accused of murdering Dunne's 22-year-old daughter. (The man was convicted of manslaughter and served about two and a half years of a six-year sentence.) Dunne's seven-city tour takes in New York, L.A., Dallas, Houston, Miami, Palm Beach and Connecticut.
