Background to Collaboration
Paul Nathan -- 11/24/97
How Swimming Lessons came to be written by two women who'd never met was reported here last week. The authors wish to emphasize that their acquaintance began when the agent, Doris Michaels, put Lynne Hugo, a potential client, in touch with Anna Tuttle Villegas, whom she already represented, as a reference. Before Hugo joined the client list, the two writers had been faxing each other news of their daily lives and passages from works in progress. "We were friends first, collaborators second," they say, " -- that's what makes our novel concerning female friendship so magical."
