The Air Apparent
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 11/24/97
Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, which marks its 30th week on PW's nonfiction list, shows no signs of slowing down. The book's move into the #3 slot this week comes as no surprise following the recent airing of the TV movie about the ill-fated Mt. Everest expedition. ABC's saturation advertising featured the cover of the Villard title, which has 730,000 copies in print after 19 trips to press. The publisher believes that the recent publicity for new titles such as National Geographic's Everest: Mountain Without Mercy (several bookstores are reporting this book among their bestsellers) and The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev (St. Martin's) are also bringing readers back to its "definitive" version of events on the mountain. And although Krakauer isn't doing interviews, he did sign 5000 copies of Into Thin Air, which Villard is making available to booksellers.
