Paperback Drumroll
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 12/1/97
Diana Gabaldon's fourth novel in her bestselling Outlander series, The Drums of Autumn, was an immediate hardcover success when it debuted last January: six weeks on PW's bestseller list, with an initial appearance in the #2 slot. It looks like Dell's mass market reprint is set to repeat the hardcover success: the book landed in stores mid-November with a 750,000-copy first printing. The author toured seven cities (she visited 15 for the hardcover launch) and her fans came out in droves. Celebrating a "Scottish" evening at the Borders bookstore in Cranston, R.I., more than 200 fans were feted with bagpipes, Walker shortbread and Scottish terrier keychains. Dell has also repackaged Gabaldon's backlist titles for a uniform look.
