DOI Foundation Seeking Director
Calvin Reid -- 12/15/97
The Association of American Publishers, in conjunction with a number of European partners, has established the International DOI Foundation, a nonprofit organization that will manage the Digital Object Identifier system, and established a search committee to find a general manager for the new organization.
The DOI is a system for digital copyright identification under development by AAP since 1995. The new foundation will take over management of the DOI system from the AAP. Craig Van Dyck, v-p, director of journal production and manufacturing for John Wiley and chair of AAP's enabling technologies committee and the search committee, told PW that the IDF has established offices in Geneva, Switzerland, and in Washington, D.C. They are seeking candidates with international business experience and technological sophistication who also have a broad knowledge of publishing and its user communities. Candidates should reply to the IDF, 1718 Connecticut Ave., NW, 7th floor, Washington, D.C. 20009.

The IDF is currently being directed by a steering committee comprised of the heads of five international houses: Charles Ellis, John Wiley, chair; Jean-Manuel Bourgois, Magnard Vuibert; Dietrich G tze, Springer-Verlag; Robert Kiernan, Routledge; and Herman Spruijt, Elsevier Science.
